Who are we?
Our family farm, founded by the Eschenlohr family in 1951, started a small scale oil mill operation in 1999. Oil mills are part of our family heritage around Munich since 1824 - one is now a well known mill museum . It was our long time dream to fill a useful gap in Canada, and to add a product to our farm yield. Ingrid is primarily looking after all marketing activities, while her husband Horst finds his engineering talent challenged even in retirement to further develop and to automate the process. |
What is an Oil Mill?
An oil mill exerts pressure to oilseeds (sunflower, sesame, canola, cotton seed, safflower , flax, many others) sufficiently high to release the oil. That simply is the process, and therefore early civilisations knew it and relied on it for valuable food oils. No chemicals or additives are needed. The result is a fine naturally tasting gourmet oil for salads, cooking, baking and for many other fine recipes. Large scale oil companies, in general, use solvents applying high temperatures, resulting in unhealthy traces and the destruction of important nutrients. Our small scale oil mills function by mechanical extraction only. The temperatures stay below 40 deg C. There are no chemical reactions. Unsaturated fatty acids and vitamins remain undiminished and unchanged. These small expeller machines are precision presses carefully adjusted to each type of seed for maximum removal of oil. The rest is the cake or meal rendering an important by-product for food (cereal) or feed (pet/horse-feed). Due to this simplicity and lack of other substances, the process is inherently natural, yielding the ultimate quality of food oil and meal from seeds.
